“They ask you to be a judge and you think sure, that’s easy,” says Brian Malarkey, a California restaurateur who is one of the four judges/mentors. “You figure you’ll just put your feet up and say whether you like something. Man, was I wrong.”
The judges, who also include chef/author Ludo Lefebvre, British food star Nigella Lawson and opinionated global food traveler Anthony Bourdain, receive a single spoonful of a dish prepared by potential contestants.
