There may be no happier sound for broadcast and cable TV networks than the cheering crowds at NFL and college football games. The new year started off with gigantic audiences for football, pretty much dominating every TV platform, according to Nielsen.
On broadcast TV, game two of the NFL playoffs (NBC) was seen by nearly 32 million people. Just to put that in perspective, by comparison, CBS's NCIS was the most-watched non-football show with an audience of just under 20 million.
On the cable side, football accounted for six of the 10 most-watched shows. The Rose Bowl was No. 1 with an audience of 17.6 million viewers. The Fiesta Bowl, in which OSU squeaked out a win over Stanford, had an audience of 13.7 million people.
