Review: Rob!

Amusing Sitcom with a Strained Premise
TVFirstLook
Claudia Bassols, Rob Schneider

Rob Schneider, best known for his stint on Saturday Night Live and countless bit parts in Adam Sandler movies, is a likeable, goofy, peculiar guy - just like Rob, the character he plays in his new sitcom of the same name (situated in CBS's sweet spot - at 8:30pm tonight, right after The Big Bang Theory).

Rob! kicks off with a few premises, none of which is especially funny. Rob has OCD. Rob is married to a Mexican woman, Maggie (Claudia Bassols), who he met only weeks earlier. And Rob is short.

Yet, despite these strained premises, Rob! is pretty funny.

The funniest part of the show is Rob Schneider, who's easy-breezy in this role. It may not, you know, challenge his acting chops. But, so what?

He's the same Rob Schneider he is in most of his roles. So, he eases into this one seemingly without much effort. But, as a result, the show is funny when Rob is being Rob.

The rest of the show, which centers around Rob meeting his wife's expansive Mexican family (including Cheech Marin as Maggie's dad), veers wildly from funny to silly to snore inducing. But it's fast-paced and the jokes come in right on time in this fairly funny sitcom.
